 The emergence of modernism which took place in the first decades of the 20th century is strongly represented in paintings by Niels Larsen Stevns, Edward Weie, Harald Giersing, Karl Isakson, Willliam Scharff, Jens Adolf Jerichau, Vilhelm Lundstrøm and many others.

This significant collection of modern pioneer work includes Giersing´s famous self-portrait from 1909, Larsen Stevns´ principal work "Kristus og Zakæus" (Christ and Zacheus), 1913 and Jais Nielsen´s cubist masterpiece "Silhouetklipperen" (The Silhouettist) from 1918.
